How do I get research experience?
Here is a helpful video from the department!
We know it can be hard to figure out how to even get started doing research and finding different labs. Every Fall quarter, Access Grads hosts a 'Meet the Labs' Event where we introduce all labs at PBS, the work they are doing and how to apply as an RA. Please make sure to keep an eye out for this! If you missed it, free to email us for access to the slides.
If you want to investigate on your own, look through the Faculty page on the PBS website. There will often be links to each Professor's lab where you can get more info. From there they may have a form for applications, or you can email faculty and/or grad students in their labs telling them you are interested!
Another great resource for seeing the research being done at UCSB is the Undergraduate Research Directory. This has a list of projects that are open to undergrad researchers (note, it's not always updated but is a great place to get a feel for research you could be interested in, and who to contact).
If you are accepted as an RA, you may want to take PSY99/199 for credits. Here is information on how to go about that.
Other resources & opportunities
The California Alliance for Minority Participation provides resources and opportunities to under-represented students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The program is sponsored by the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation at the National Science Foundation, and is part of the statewide CAMP program.
ABRCMS - Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists
For over 20 years, the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) – recipient of the 2019 AIMBE Excellence in STEM Education Award – has been the go-to conference for historically excluded community college, undergraduate and postbaccalaureate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As ABRCMS has continued to grow and evolve, it has also become a space for graduate students, postdocs, faculty, program administrators and more.
